I'm devastated to have to let you know that Cathryn (Sheppard) Gamble passed away on January 11, 2008 after a long illness. Services have not yet been announced.

I knew Cathy from elementary school through high school. I will always remember her as a kind, giving, and strong woman. All of my thoughts are with her friends, family, and husband right now.

Hi everyone - wanted to let you all know about a site I just launched (www.friendswithclass.com) which offers custom-created classes that range from Photography With Your Toddler, to Wine Tasting, to Cooking With Marcela from Martha Stewart's Apprentice.

As you can see on the "About Us" section of the website, Steve and I are proud parents of Evan (2) and Alec (5 mos) and we wanted to create a platform for having fun activities with the kids, for date nights with friends, and also to support our work in the community with Habitat for Humanity, etc.

Check out the site, the online catalog and sign-up for a class or join us on community and non-profit events (check out the awesome Walk Their Walk at Lake Murray). It will be great to see you all again!

I'm sorry to have to pass along this sad news about another PHHS teacher.

SHAUGHNESSY, ROBERT THOMAS Born September 12, 1941, Robert Thomas Shaughnessy passed away suddenly on July 8, 2006, much too soon for those who loved him. He was a native of Chicago, Illinois who fell in love with San Diego on a midshipman cruise. He made this city his home with his wife Cynthia in 1963. Bob finished his education at San Diego State University and began a thirty-year career in teaching, primarily as an English, Humanities and Journalism teacher at Patrick Henry High School. His dedication to his students included a stint as cheer advisor and coach of a championship Academic Decathalon team. The same passion for world cultures, history and current events that inspired him in the classroom fostered a love for travel and new adventures. While at home, he relished the challenge of the daily New York Times crossword puzzle, gardening, and collecting wines to share with friends. His resounding bass voice graced choirs from the St. George Glee Club in Evanston, Illinois to the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church choir in La Mesa, where he sang for 25 years. He was also an avid golfer and longtime member of the Nomads Golf Club. His time as a midshipman and in the ROTC at Northwestern University in Chicago spurred a lifelong love of the sea. He became a tireless worker and volunteer docent at the Maritime Museum of San Diego, where he constructed the popular children's play boat and helped rebuild the historical Pilot boat. Bob delighted in meeting the public and sharing his vast knowledge of the museum's vessels. Most importantly, Bob was a beloved husband, father and grandfather whose love of learning and joy in life touched family and countless friends. Bob is survived by his wife, Cindy, his daughters Heather Wolzen and Cricket Jamet and his grandchildren, Taylor, Carly, Nicole and Nathan. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 13th, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 4816 Glen St., La Mesa, CA 91941. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Bob's memory to: Maritime Museum of San Diego, 1492 N. Marv Blevins, 71; Patrick Henry science teacher, baseball coach

Generations of Patrick Henry High School students knew him as “Marvelous Marv,” a science department fixture who introduced Advanced Placement chemistry to the San Carlos campus in 1974.

The generous appellation seemed to apply equally to the classroom or the baseball field.

When Marv Blevins threw batting practice to the Patriots teams he coached, he never failed to mix in some confounding breaking balls.

“The kids couldn't believe this white-haired old guy could get the ball past them,” said his son, Dennis.

A lawn mower accident in the mid-1970s removed the tip of the middle finger on Mr. Blevins' right hand, giving him a natural screwball.

When Mr. Blevins retired from Patrick Henry in 2000, ending 32 years on the faculty, the school retired his No. 13 coaching jersey.

To further acknowledge his legacy, the Marvin E. Blevins Science Building was dedicated at Patrick Henry two weeks ago.

Mr. Blevins died of complications from skin cancer Wednesday at his San Carlos home. He was 71.

As a member of Patrick Henry's founding faculty in 1968, Mr. Blevins helped design the school's chemistry program. He went on to pioneer Advanced Placement chemistry in area schools and co-wrote a national achievement test and a teachers guide.

He served as a district mentor teacher for eight years and received several awards. The Corporation for Excellence in Public Education honored him in 1989, and the University of California San Diego conferred the Exceptional Teacher Award for 1995-2000.

“His mantra was 'Think mole,' ” his son said. “In chemistry, that's a single unit. He wanted his students to focus on the most simple approach.”
